Body Mass Index
Find out about the term Body Mass Index and use these steps to help calculate your own BMI
Body Mass Index is a reference to the height and weight ratio of a person, it is often used in modelling to get a more systematic idea of people's shape and figure and what they may be appropriate for. For example recently some Fashion have banned the use of models under BMI 18 leading to slightly larger models being used (large relative to the modelling industry). According to the world health organisation you are underweight if you have a BMI under 18.5 and overweight if you have a BMI over 24.9. Suggesting that there are quite a few underweight Catwalk models. If your BMI goes below the critical 16 point mark then this is seen as starvation
Here is a simple guide to calculating your Body Mass index:
- Find your height squared by measuring yourself and multiplying this number by itself
- Measure your weight in kg
- Divide the figure of height squared by your weight
