Size Zero Models
A discussion of the issue of size zero models, here is explained what this term refers to and how it is no longer looked favourably upon as an image within the fashion industry
There is always a lot of press attention regarding size zero models as it is a controversial aspect of catwalk modelling. Often thin has been seen as good in the industry and this has led to models going to ridiculous lengths to try to maintain an unhealthy and starved weight. In recent years the industry has fought back against the dangers inherent in trying to attain such unhealthy weights by banning size zero models from some shows and fashion weeks. However, if there is a trend for this starved and unhealthy look as seems to happen cyclically then models will put themselves at great risk to try to be what the industry is looking for. The modelling industry is home to many girls and increasingly boys who feel they need to be a certain weight, this leads to a high percentage of models developing eating disorders. It is therefore important to educate girls and boys looking to go into modelling about living healthily and maintaining a healthy eating regime, they are far more likely to get work if they are fit and healthy and looking natural rather than looking dangerously thin.
The term size zero relates to an American clothing size which is equivalent to a UK size 4. The measurements which constitute a size zero are, Size Zero bust size is 31.5 inches (80 cm), waist 23 inches (60 cm) and hips 34 inches (86 cm). To put this into perspective, the average waist size of a British eight-year-old is 22 inches (56 cm).
